  1. Feel free to add comments as you wish Joyce and Lou a Happy 50th. We'll start by saying we are the luckiest family around to have such loving, supportive and generous parents. We look forward to celebrating over the coming months.

  2. Joyce is the one--the only friend I ever had by that name. She filled a time in my life when having a special pal was very important. We met at First Methodist Sunday School. Then “wonder of wonders” she transferred to Lincoln Elementary School where I had entered in the second grade. She may have come later that same year or the next--certainly during the mid-forties. I remember an immediate bonding with her--likely I grasped an opportunity to connect with someone I knew from church. She seemed to be glad too.
Scenes flash from my memory: walking through Sunset Park to Kenwood Drive where Joyce lived with mother, father, and Mrs. Box, her grandmother. We shared overnights, intense chats, hair curlers, pedal pushers, trips to John Ross, buttered toast in her breakfast room, birthday parties, long walks. With her I got respite from a houseful of young siblings; with me she got away from the watchful eyes of too many grownups.
This companionship lasted beyond Middletown, our home town. Joyce and I entered Ohio Wesleyan University together as freshmen and shared a room for two years. Here our friendship circle expanded into the Quad Squad and beyond. Probably the zenith for this foursome was the sophomore trip to New York City. We took a big bite of the Apple before it was an apple at all. This place converted us, a Buckeye foursome, into worldly, glamourous adventurers. Or, so goes the fantasy in which we basked.
Meanwhile there was a figure who was ever more frequently in Joyce’s conversation: lou. . .Lou. . .LOU. . . LOU! He appeared on the scene in high school and took on a bit part at first, but soon got a starring role and eventually became the lead in Joyce’s life.
She was there as maid-of-honor to proceed me down the marriage aisle. I, regrettably, was a continent and an ocean away when Joyce and Lou tied the knot--twice, I believe. Life has interfered with the closeness we once shared, but she is still my only Joyce and someone linked to my youth with unbreakable strands of friendship. In honoring her here I honor Lou as well--the love of Joyce’s life and a partner for the duration. Many, many congratulations.
    Love from Nancy Lee

  5. From Ed and Ginger Seamon (one Middletown High couple to another)

Our lives have crossed these many years,
We've shared some laughs and even some tears.

As teens we cheered the Middies to fame.
Who knew our kids would do the same?

We've eaten together at cards, gourmet, 1st Presby, on trips...
Let's not mention mounds of pies and cakes, hors d'oeurves and dips!

But we'll raise our glasses and tip our hats, too,
Here's a toast to a great couple - Joyce and Lou.

    Happy 50th!

    Ed and Ginger Seamon

  7. Hi Joyce and Lou,
Mark and I treasured the times we had with both of you.
You were such a support to Mark in his ministry and to me.
It was great to have you here for a visit.
You both have brought many happy moments to others. It was a delight to watch the video and see your smiling faces.
I know you will have a wonderful 50th surrounded with family and friends.
I will be thinking of you.
Love and hugs to you both,
    Priscilla Allen

  8. Joyce and Lou

You two are perfect examples of those who "live life and live it abundantly."

The fact that we met you in our later years is our loss. We missed those fun high school, college, and young adult years with you, but the times we have spent together have, without fail, been good ones.

Joyce, I will be forever grateful for your introducing me to BSF and the life lessons I learned there. The lunches following those studies, including the "garbage can sandwich" didn't help our waistlines, but who cares?

Some memories just stand out, such as Stephen Ministry meetings, overnights at Kirkmont (especially the silent evening when we had so much we wanted to say), shopping at the Green,
shopping at Kenwood, shopping and then there's shopping. Remember when we went to Macy's and almost missed Sarah Ferguson? Poor thing is in the news again.

One of my greatest fears, Joyce, is that either you or I will be driving and have to take a detour. No GPS or road map will help us, and we may never be seen again!

Happy Anniversary to two beautiful people!

  9. Hi Joyce and Lou,
We wish you a very happy 50th Wedding Anniversary on September 3rd, 2010. What took you so long? We celebrate our 54th on June 9th. :)

Who would have thought we would be sending anniversary wishes by e-mail, blogs or the Internet through cyber space back when we were in high school. It is amazing how much has changed.

But the two of you have not changed at all. You have always been the perfect pair. Enjoy.

    Warm regards,
    Dale and Edith Kohler
